Recycling in Two Communities I
In the early 1990s, recycling of household waste was not as prevalent as it is today and the availability of infrastructure for recycling varied substantially among communities. At this time, Minneapolis (MN) had provided extensive opportunities for residents to recycle household waste, whereas Des Moines (IA) had not yet provided many of these opportunities. Augustinack (1992) examined differences in behavior and attitudes towards recycling among residents from these two cities. In one part of her study, she wanted to determine if methods for disposing of “plastic containers” differed between the two cities. She considered three broad categories of disposal – “recycle”, “reuse”, or “throw-away.” She administered writtern surveys to a random sample of residents and the results for those that chose to return the survey are shown below.
