In class we will consider the effect that an invasion of Northern Pike (Esox lucius) has on fish populations that were already present in the lake. This class exercise is based on this paper by Paukert and Willis (2003).

To prepare for this class exercise, you should research1 answers to the following three questions:

  • What is the typical diet of Northern Pike?
  • Do Northern Pike select prey by species, size, both, or neither?
  • What impact does Northern Pike predation have on populations of their prey?

In class, we will work through the questions described in these slides.

  1. Fishes of Wisconsin (Becker, 1983) is a particularly good source for some of this information. Note that the description for Northern Pike begins on page 398.
